This message is going out to all Chapter Presidents. Please let me know if you are getting this message in error.
My name is Autumn Alden. I’m a full-time faculty member at Bristol Community College and I’m writing to you as the Chair of the MCCC Nominations & Elections Committee.
This is a friendly reminder, especially for those of you that are new Chapter Presidents, that the MCCC is holding their statewide meeting at end of next month. The Delegates Assembly takes place Saturday, April 29 at Doubletree by Hilton, 5400 Computer Drive, Westborough, MA 01581. Per MCCC bylaws, each chapter is entitled to send delegates.
I’m attaching two documents: Delegate Assembly Info 2017 and Conduct of Chapter Elections. The first, previously sent out by Phil Mahler, gives the entitlement and goal for each chapter. If every chapter reaches its goal and sends at least that many delegates to the assembly, then we are assured a quorum.
As noted on the attachment, each chapter should hold an election in March or April, at least two weeks prior April 29 this year. This election should be overseen by your chapter’s Nominations & Elections Committee if you have one. The second attachment, Conduct of Chapter Elections, has the important details.
A key part of any election is adequate notice to all chapter members for nominations and for voting. As chair of the BrCCC Nominations & Elections Committee, I have already sent out the following email to my chapter. Per our chapter bylaws and past practice, if the number of candidates is less than or equal to our entitlement, those candidates are considered elected to be delegates. Else, the committee will hold an election. Note that the number of delegates is in addition to the chapter director.
The MCCC Delegate Assembly will take place this year on Saturday, April 29, 2017. At that assembly our chapter will be represented by our officers, our director, and up to 25 delegates (and up to 25 alternates). If you would like to nominate yourself as a delegate, please do so by replying to this email. If you would like to nominate someone else as a delegate, you can do that. I’ll contact that person to ask for interest and availability. And again, you can make the nomination by replying to this email. You can also copy the other members of the N&E Committee if you’d like, Sharon Pero and Dan Avedikian.
Nominations will close March 31 at 11:59 pm. If the number of candidates is less than or equal to our entitlement, that is, if we have 25 candidates or less, then those candidates are automatically elected as delegates without holding an actual election. If we have more than 25 candidates, we will hold an election to choose the delegates and alternatives.
Please consider nominating yourself or someone else for the Assembly. This is your union and important decisions will be made at this meeting.
Nominations & Elections Committee, Chair
Please feel free to forward this to your N&E Committee chair to use similar language in the call for nominations. Of course, adjust the numbers to reflect your chapter’s entitlement.
If you have questions or concerns about your chapter’s elections and its policies, please don’t hesitate to ask. Being a new chair of the MCCC N&E Committee, I may not know the answer, but I’ll do my best to find out and be helpful. Our union is only as strong as our members are involved.
