MCCC STUDENT INTERN PROGRAM

MCCC Leaders with the Senate PresidentWhat can you do for your best students?  Encourage them to apply for the MCCC Student Legislative Intern Program. The Massachusetts Community College College Council sponsors up to four State House interns per semester. This program provides our best and brightest students with an opportunity to learn first-hand about state government and to consider a career in government and politics. Recently our students have worked at the offices of Senate President Robert Travaglini, Senate Majority Whip Joan Menard, Sen. Ed Augustus, Sen. Robert Antonioni and Reps. Michael Costello, Lewis Evangelidis, Mark Falzone, William Galvin, Mary Grant, Kathi-Anne Reinstein, Second Assistant Majority Leader Byron Rushing and many others.

Please encourage your students to apply for the $250 grants, which can be used to underwrite transportation costs and other expenses for what we know will be a wonderful experience.

Tesfaye worked on constituent services for Antonioni, chair of the Joint Committee on Education, and received a $250 grant from the MCCC to underwrite her expenses.

Tesfaye plans to transfer to a four-year college in the Boston area and major in Physics. She hopes to become a college professor!

The MCCC is seeking applicants for the Legislative Internship Program for the Spring 2008 semester. This program provides selected students with an opportunity to learn first-hand about state government and to consider a career in government and politics. MCCC interns have worked at many legislative offices, including those of Senate Majority Whip Joan Menard, Senate Minority Leader Richard Tisei, and Second Assistant Majority Leader Byron Rushing.

A $250 grant to underwrite travel and other costs will be awarded to up to 4 interns per semester selected for MCCC sponsorship. MCCC requirements parallel those of the Legislative Education Office (LEO):
  • Students complete a one-application and also provide a resume, transcript, and writing sample.
  • Student interns typically will spend a minimum of six weeks in their placement with a suggested schedule of two days and twelve hours per week, but variations on this schedule do exist.
  • A minimum of 72 hours is required in all, and more hours are encouraged. Indistrict placements are also a possibility, though a State House placement is recommended.
  • MCCC requires that candidates for consideration have a 3.0 minimum GPA.
This is an excellent opportunity for our MCCC students. Internships can be integrated with Co-operative Work, Directed Study and Community Service Projects for college credit.

MCCC sponsored interns have raved about their State House experiences. Please encourage your students, especially those interested in history or political science, to apply for MCCC's legislative internship program and the accompanying $250 grants, which can be used to underwrite transportation costs and other expenses.
